Ericsson to help IIT students develop patents

Swedish telecom gear maker Ericsson has announced a programme to help IIT engineers develop technology patents and said that intellectual property rights will be owned by the developer team or students.<br />
<br />
Under the programme, the company will select two projects which will get a funding of Rs 10 lakh each and developers may even get access to its labs for development of the product.<br />
<br />
"We are seeking to encourage the culture of innovation within the IITs and to support these talented young minds to develop more innovative and relevant solutions for the benefit of industry," Ericsson head of India Region Chris Houghton said in a statement.<br />
<br />
Ericsson will select for two projects for Ericsson Innovation awards. The selected project will be given 10 lakh each. Depending on the nature of project, the developer or team of developers may even get access to Ericsson Lab for development of product.<br />
<br />
"The winners will receive a funding of Rs 10 lakh each for incubation of the project over a two-year period. Secondly, the patents will remain with the students," Houghton said.<br />
<br />
At present, government runs a programme for promoting technical Intellectual Property Rights in which Indian innovator gets only 40% of revenue generated from the patent. India is considered hub of research and development but majority of IPRs are owned by foreign based multi-national companies.<br />
<br />
The award has called for innovations in areas such as web design, cloud computing, storage and networking, human-machine interface, embedded and hardware system design, machine-to-machine or Internet of Things, open source, signal processing, graphics and visualization, as well as research.<br />
<br />
"Ericsson has invited project proposals in these areas from IIT students across Chennai, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Mumbai, Roorkee and Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi," the statement said.<br />
<br />
Following the preliminary screening phase at their respective IITs, the student proposals will be shortlisted through two jury sessions.<br />
<br />
In the first round, the jury will shortlist up to 10 proposals on criteria such as degree of innovation, feasibility, usability, relevance, time to market and the overall impact on masses. Each shortlisted proposal will be given an incentive by Ericsson to complete the initial prototype within three months.<br />
<br />
In the second round, the jury will select up to two innovation projects which will be announced in a ceremony in April 2015 and these projects will get support from Ericsson.<br />

It is expected to sell at around Rs. 40,000 above the price of the regular CRDe variant of the car, which is a good decision by the company.

BMW Introduces the New X5 M and X6 M, Set to Debut at the Los Angeles Motor Show

<p class="article__title  article__title--single">BMW has lifted the veils off the new X5 M and the X6 M. The X5 M is the SUV while the X6 M is the company’s luxury crossover outing. The cars are expected to be showcased at the upcoming Los Angeles Motor Show. The cars are expected for delivery by next April. As for the price, the X5 M starts at $99,650 while its sedan sibling, the X6 M comes at a hefty $103,050.</p><br/>These monsters are expected to carry the same 4.4-litre direct injection V8 petrol engine used by the M5 and M6. The cars are expected to have greater power and torque, enhanced straight line accelerative ability and a slightly higher top speed. They will also have reduced combined cycle consumption and emissions. The offering includes a performance cruiser Breakout at a price of Rs. 16.28 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), which is the latest addition to the Harley-Davidson’s Softail family of motorcycles.<br/><br/>The new offerings also include the hand-crafted CVO Limited, which is priced at Rs. 49.23 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi). Along with that, Harley-Davidson also launched the Street Glide Special priced at Rs. 29.70 lakh. As Harley nourishes in India with rock music festivals and bike rallies, the new offerings would prove attractive to aspirational young Indians, for whom a motorcycle is more than simply the cheapest form of motorised transport.</p><br/><p class="body">“Motorcycles launched today have always had an incredibly passionate following here. <br/><br/>Just 0.7mm of tummy fat to go<br/><br/> <br/><br/>LG Display has moved one step further in its goal of creating a phone with absolutely no bezel at all, creating a display that only has an extra 0.7mm of space at each side.<br/><br/>Earlier this year, the thinness of the LG G3's bezel impressed - just 1.15mm to each side. But that has been slimmed down even further for this new screen prototype, due to enter production imminently.<br/><br/>It's a 5.3-inch screen, which it notably a bit smaller than the display used in the 5.5-inch LG G3.<br/><h3>Check out the tech</h3><br/>The obvious question: how? The new screen employs something LG calls Neo Edge technology, which uses an adhesive rather than tape to seal the circuit board and backlight. There's also no plastic guide panel, which features on other LG Display LCD screens.<br/><br/>A third measure also helps keep the display ultra-thin. AIT tech, as LG Display calls it, sees the touch panel embedded into the LCD display element, much as we see in Samsung Super AMOLED screens like the Samsung Galaxy S5.<br/><br/>LG Display says the screen is to go into mass production in November, and that it will be promoted to the Chinese market first. Because, y'know, they love giant screens over there - LG's own explanation.<br/><br/>To clear up any confusion, LG Display's screen units don't just end up in LG phones, but all sorts. Even iPhones.<br/><br/>However, it seems almost certain that we'll see similar technical moves made in the LG G4, or whatever LG chooses to call the follow-up to the LG G3.<br/><br/>The benefit of an even slimmer bezel is pretty obvious. It'll let you make a phone's screen slightly bigger with either a minor body size increase, or none at all. And as new models seem to be legally bound to offer bigger screens than the last these days, it's a relief for those of us who don't have giant hands.

Samsung Galaxy A5 and A3: Sleek, slim, fully metal (hands-on)

Side by side on a table, the two nearly identical rectangular handsets look innocuous enough and extremely familiar. Yet two things quietly make the Samsung Galaxy A3 and A5 stand out: their all-aluminum material and their unibody construction. Following the metal-framed (and plastic-backed)Samsung Galaxy Alpha and Galaxy Note 4, the A5 and A3 represent Samsung's first stab at an all-metal build, and the first of its smartphones to seal in the battery completely.<br/><br/>The square-sided handsets look and feel good, similar to the Alpha, or like smaller, more maneuverable versions of the Note 4. They're also on the light side and are noticeably slim -- in fact, they're the most svelte Galaxy phones yet. As midrange phones, you won't find a heart-rate monitor built in with the camera module; Samsung says that sensor is reserved for more premium phones like the Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 4, and Galaxy Alpha.<br/><h3>Midrange specs</h3><br/>You might think that luxe metal casings like these would house equally high-end specs, but the A series is actually defined by midrange specs that target a more youthful demographic. Another feature, called Wise Voice, helps keep volume levels constant for the receiver even if you're holding the phone away from your face. Sounds good in theory, though I didn't get a chance to test out either enhancement.<br/><br/>In terms of color, both the A3 and A5 will come in six shades. There's the usual black and white, gold and silver metallics, and the same blossom pink and light blue as the Note 4. As usual, not every color will be available in every country.<br/><h3>Extra themes</h3><br/>Android 4.4 KitKat is the OS standard for these phones, with Samsung's TouchWiz interface on top. In a nod to self-expression, a new take on the UI lets you apply four new themes -- such as "nature" -- that applies pre-selected images and ringtones. The A3 and A5 also have their own unique touch sounds that other Galaxy phones don't.<br/><h3>Supercharged selfies</h3><br/>The A3 and A5 may fall in the middle of the hardware spectrum, but they have a few fun new camera features dedicated to selfies, another huge trend we're seeing in smartphones.<br/><br/><figure class="image pull-none image-full-width"><img alt="" class="" height="578" src="http://cnet3.cbsistatic.com/hub/i/r/2014/10/30/e6185172-0c00-4694-a143-3b7f0152ce13/resize/770x578/9922937e872cb81db458770264d9e300/samsung-galaxy-a5-04734-006.jpg" width="770" /><figcaption><span class="caption">The Note 4's rear-camera selfie mode is alive and well on the A3 and A5</span></figcaption></figure>It all starts with wide-angle selfies that shoot up to 100 degrees in portrait and a 120-degree landscape/panorama mode. The A3 and A5 also get the same rear-camera selfie feature first seen on the Note 4 (I really like this one). In addition, the airbrushing Beauty mode found in pretty much every Samsung and LG front-facing camera goes a step further here with effects to correct your skin tone and slim your face, plus one to enlarge your eyes. If you prefer to send your selfies <em>au naturel</em>, you'll have the option to turn this off.<br/><br/>You can trigger selfies with a voice prompt as before, and Samsung also adds the ability to launch a count-down by holding your hand in front of the camera. You'll have 3 seconds to get your palm out of the way before the shutter snaps to life.<br/><br/>Also brand-new is an animated GIF mode, which combines up to 20 pictures you capture by pressing and holding the shutter button. You can adjust the frame rate for 1-to-10 frames per second, and also tweak the GIF quality using a sliding scale. Quality on my GIF was choppy in my hands-on demo, and that's because it caps off at a 640x480-pixel video resolution. Sharing is also limited. While animated GIFS are shareable through a messaging app, it wasn't clear if you could upload them to social networks like Facebook.<br/><h3>Where can you get the A5 and A3, and for how much?</h3><br/>The Galaxy A3 and A5 will launch in Asia first in November (including China), followed by rest of the world. While Samsung hasn't released pricing or distribution details yet (carriers will likely do that on their own), look for costs of unlocked models to come in significantly lower than the Note 4.<br/><h3>Outlook</h3><br/>Once again, Samsung's approach of aiming its first fully metal devices to the middle of the market rather than the tippy-top is a different strategy than I'd have expected from the smartphone leader. It isn't an unreasonable position, however. Appearances matter, and with midrange specs largely on par with competing devices, the more premium metal may very well help the A3 and A5 stand out against rival phones.
