LG has almost entirely killed the bezel - roll on the G4

<br/><br/>Just 0.7mm of tummy fat to go<br/><br/> <br/><br/>LG Display has moved one step further in its goal of creating a phone with absolutely no bezel at all, creating a display that only has an extra 0.7mm of space at each side.<br/><br/>Earlier this year, the thinness of the LG G3's bezel impressed - just 1.15mm to each side. But that has been slimmed down even further for this new screen prototype, due to enter production imminently.<br/><br/>It's a 5.3-inch screen, which it notably a bit smaller than the display used in the 5.5-inch LG G3.<br/><h3>Check out the tech</h3><br/>The obvious question: how? The new screen employs something LG calls Neo Edge technology, which uses an adhesive rather than tape to seal the circuit board and backlight. There's also no plastic guide panel, which features on other LG Display LCD screens.<br/><br/>A third measure also helps keep the display ultra-thin. AIT tech, as LG Display calls it, sees the touch panel embedded into the LCD display element, much as we see in Samsung Super AMOLED screens like the Samsung Galaxy S5.<br/><br/>LG Display says the screen is to go into mass production in November, and that it will be promoted to the Chinese market first. Because, y'know, they love giant screens over there - LG's own explanation.<br/><br/>To clear up any confusion, LG Display's screen units don't just end up in LG phones, but all sorts. Even iPhones.<br/><br/>However, it seems almost certain that we'll see similar technical moves made in the LG G4, or whatever LG chooses to call the follow-up to the LG G3.<br/><br/>The benefit of an even slimmer bezel is pretty obvious. It'll let you make a phone's screen slightly bigger with either a minor body size increase, or none at all. And as new models seem to be legally bound to offer bigger screens than the last these days, it's a relief for those of us who don't have giant hands.

Samsung Galaxy A5 and A3: Sleek, slim, fully metal (hands-on)

Side by side on a table, the two nearly identical rectangular handsets look innocuous enough and extremely familiar. Yet two things quietly make the Samsung Galaxy A3 and A5 stand out: their all-aluminum material and their unibody construction. Following the metal-framed (and plastic-backed)Samsung Galaxy Alpha and Galaxy Note 4, the A5 and A3 represent Samsung's first stab at an all-metal build, and the first of its smartphones to seal in the battery completely.<br/><br/>The square-sided handsets look and feel good, similar to the Alpha, or like smaller, more maneuverable versions of the Note 4. They're also on the light side and are noticeably slim -- in fact, they're the most svelte Galaxy phones yet. Don't look for any real standout textures or design elements to show off the move to metal; these smooth-backed specimens are understated as far as that goes.<br/><div class="shortcode gallery size_small" data-component="["ellipsis"]"><br/><h6><span data-ellipsis="{"watch":"window"}">ALL-METAL GALAXY A5, A3 BREAK NEW SAMSUNG GROUND (PICTURES)</span></h6><br/><div class="shortcode-gallery" data-component="shortcodeGallery" data-shortcode-gallery-options="{"count":7,"visible":4,"preloadThreshold":7}"><br/><div data-item="window"><br/><div class="row viewport" data-item="viewport"><br/><div class="col-2 selected" data-item="image"><figure class=" img"><img alt="samsung-galaxy-a5-04719-001.jpg" class="" height="128" src="http://cnet3.cbsistatic.com/hub/i/r/2014/10/30/1fdac43b-76e2-48a0-80ff-efb90dde2038/thumbnail/170x128/b2c42fa549a03afcfb0e493ee707f9b1/samsung-galaxy-a5-04719-001.jpg" width="170" /></figure></div><br/><div class="col-2 " data-item="image"><figure class=" img"><img alt="samsung-galaxy-a5-04724-002.jpg" class="" height="128" src="http://cnet1.cbsistatic.com/hub/i/r/2014/10/30/6ac92531-abb9-4c07-8b75-0164c9638821/thumbnail/170x128/d250a3d72eaa1036d47e1b7d8627656e/samsung-galaxy-a5-04724-002.jpg" width="170" /></figure></div><br/><div class="col-2 " data-item="image"><figure class=" img"><img alt="samsung-galaxy-a5-04732-005.jpg" class="" height="128" src="http://cnet4.cbsistatic.com/hub/i/r/2014/10/30/5ca0b5e1-a0b6-4205-9457-17ce67d1ff2f/thumbnail/170x128/322b5c4002347f7e0193bc4a8038a549/samsung-galaxy-a5-04732-005.jpg" width="170" /></figure></div><br/><div class="col-2 " data-item="image"><figure class=" img"><img alt="samsung-galaxy-a5-04726-003.jpg" class="" height="128" src="http://cnet1.cbsistatic.com/hub/i/r/2014/10/30/7cddf42f-b207-4d81-b1b1-15eb73f21a98/thumbnail/170x128/cbb9cf3720210f4e2b3a650999a25e9a/samsung-galaxy-a5-04726-003.jpg" width="170" /></figure></div><br/><div class="col-2 " data-item="image"><figure class=" img"><img alt="samsung-galaxy-a5-04729-004.jpg" class="" data-src="http://cnet4.cbsistatic.com/hub/i/r/2014/10/30/70fc205f-bbe1-46a9-9b8f-e7f98e404ea5/thumbnail/170x128/21fce33c849f7b1dd3250f2ce77ee11c/samsung-galaxy-a5-04729-004.jpg" height="128" src="http://cnet4.cbsistatic.com/hub/i/r/2014/10/30/70fc205f-bbe1-46a9-9b8f-e7f98e404ea5/thumbnail/170x128/21fce33c849f7b1dd3250f2ce77ee11c/samsung-galaxy-a5-04729-004.jpg" width="170" /></figure></div><br/><div class="col-2 " data-item="image"><figure class=" img"><img alt="samsung-galaxy-a5-04739-008.jpg" class="" data-src="http://cnet4.cbsistatic.com/hub/i/r/2014/10/30/56d9c5f2-e530-418e-a2d3-2807ec5dff11/thumbnail/170x128/207872d9c6cffcd78136a4ef97a1d3ee/samsung-galaxy-a5-04739-008.jpg" height="128" src="http://cnet4.cbsistatic.com/hub/i/r/2014/10/30/56d9c5f2-e530-418e-a2d3-2807ec5dff11/thumbnail/170x128/207872d9c6cffcd78136a4ef97a1d3ee/samsung-galaxy-a5-04739-008.jpg" width="170" /></figure></div><br/><div class="col-2 " data-item="image"><figure class=" img"><img alt="samsung-galaxy-a5-04741-009.jpg" class="" data-src="http://cnet4.cbsistatic.com/hub/i/r/2014/10/30/96d224d2-6979-4fdc-b734-d791e35ac1af/thumbnail/170x128/e85d571e0083881e13ec0524c703a826/samsung-galaxy-a5-04741-009.jpg" height="128" src="http://cnet4.cbsistatic.com/hub/i/r/2014/10/30/96d224d2-6979-4fdc-b734-d791e35ac1af/thumbnail/170x128/e85d571e0083881e13ec0524c703a826/samsung-galaxy-a5-04741-009.jpg" width="170" /></figure></div><br/></div><br/></div><br/><div class="row controls"><br/><div data-item="image-count"></div><br/></div><br/></div><br/></div><br/>Since the back cover isn't removable, you'll find the SIM-card and microSD-card slots on the right edge. In some countries, a hybrid slot will accommodate either a second SIM or a storage card, just not both at the same time. As midrange phones, you won't find a heart-rate monitor built in with the camera module; Samsung says that sensor is reserved for more premium phones like the Galaxy S5, Galaxy Note 4, and Galaxy Alpha.<br/><h3>Midrange specs</h3><br/>You might think that luxe metal casings like these would house equally high-end specs, but the A series is actually defined by midrange specs that target a more youthful demographic. Samsung's market studies revealed that this group isn't fussy about top-flight hardware, but is turning toward the metal trend in a serious way.<br/><br/><figure class="shortcode chart type_geekboxchart"><br/><h2>SAMSUNG GALAXY A3, A5 SPECS</h2><br/><div class="chartWrapper"><br/><table><br/><thead><br/><tr><br/><th></th><br/><th>A5</th><br/><th>A3</th><br/></tr><br/></thead><br/><tbody><br/><tr><br/><th>Operating system</th><br/><td>Android 4.4 KitKat</td><br/><td>Android 4.4 KitKat</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><th>Screen size</th><br/><td>5-inch AMOLED</td><br/><td>4.5-inch AMOLED</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><th>Resolution</th><br/><td>1,280x720; 294ppi</td><br/><td>960x540; 245ppi</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><th>Dimensions</th><br/><td>5.5 x 2.7 x 0.26-inch; 139.3mm x 69.7mm x 6.7mm</td><br/><td>5.1 x 2.6 x 0.27-inch; 130.1 x 65.5 x 6.9mm</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><th>Weight</th><br/><td>4.3 ounces (123 grams)</td><br/><td>3.9 ounces (110.3 grams)</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><th>Cameras (back/front)</th><br/><td>13-megapixel; 5-megapixel</td><br/><td>8-megapixel; 5-megapixel</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><th>Processor</th><br/><td>1.2GHz quad-core</td><br/><td>1.2GHz quad-core</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><th>Storage</th><br/><td>16GB</td><br/><td>16GB</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><th>Expandable storage</th><br/><td>Up to 64GB</td><br/><td>Up to 64GB</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><th>RAM</th><br/><td>2GB</td><br/><td>1GB</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><th>Battery</th><br/><td>2,300mAh</td><br/><td>1,900mAh</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><th>Bluetooth</th><br/><td>4.0</td><br/><td>4.0</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><th>4G LTE</th><br/><td>Yes, Category 4</td><br/><td>Yes, Category 4</td><br/></tr><br/><tr><br/><th></th><br/></tr><br/></tbody><br/></table><br/></div><br/></figure>Samsung also points out that the A5 ad A3 emphasize sound quality, with adjustable audio that increases volume when it detects competing background noise. Another feature, called Wise Voice, helps keep volume levels constant for the receiver even if you're holding the phone away from your face. Sounds good in theory, though I didn't get a chance to test out either enhancement.<br/><br/>In terms of color, both the A3 and A5 will come in six shades. There's the usual black and white, gold and silver metallics, and the same blossom pink and light blue as the Note 4. As usual, not every color will be available in every country.<br/><h3>Extra themes</h3><br/>Android 4.4 KitKat is the OS standard for these phones, with Samsung's TouchWiz interface on top. In a nod to self-expression, a new take on the UI lets you apply four new themes -- such as "nature" -- that applies pre-selected images and ringtones. The A3 and A5 also have their own unique touch sounds that other Galaxy phones don't.<br/><h3>Supercharged selfies</h3><br/>The A3 and A5 may fall in the middle of the hardware spectrum, but they have a few fun new camera features dedicated to selfies, another huge trend we're seeing in smartphones.<br/><br/><figure class="image pull-none image-full-width"><img alt="" class="" height="578" src="http://cnet3.cbsistatic.com/hub/i/r/2014/10/30/e6185172-0c00-4694-a143-3b7f0152ce13/resize/770x578/9922937e872cb81db458770264d9e300/samsung-galaxy-a5-04734-006.jpg" width="770" /><figcaption><span class="caption">The Note 4's rear-camera selfie mode is alive and well on the A3 and A5</span></figcaption></figure>It all starts with wide-angle selfies that shoot up to 100 degrees in portrait and a 120-degree landscape/panorama mode. The A3 and A5 also get the same rear-camera selfie feature first seen on the Note 4 (I really like this one). In addition, the airbrushing Beauty mode found in pretty much every Samsung and LG front-facing camera goes a step further here with effects to correct your skin tone and slim your face, plus one to enlarge your eyes. If you prefer to send your selfies <em>au naturel</em>, you'll have the option to turn this off.<br/><br/>You can trigger selfies with a voice prompt as before, and Samsung also adds the ability to launch a count-down by holding your hand in front of the camera. You'll have 3 seconds to get your palm out of the way before the shutter snaps to life.<br/><br/>Also brand-new is an animated GIF mode, which combines up to 20 pictures you capture by pressing and holding the shutter button. You can adjust the frame rate for 1-to-10 frames per second, and also tweak the GIF quality using a sliding scale. You'll also be able to reorder frames and adjust the settings before saving your animated GIF.<br/><br/><figure class="image pull-none image-full-width"><img alt="" class="" data-original=" http://cnet2.cbsistatic.com/hub/i/r/2014/10/30/56d9c5f2-e530-418e-a2d3-2807ec5dff11/resize/770x578/092c2dd62a6d35477ca39fa285ce34f7/samsung-galaxy-a5-04739-008.jpg" height="578" src="http://cnet2.cbsistatic.com/hub/i/r/2014/10/30/56d9c5f2-e530-418e-a2d3-2807ec5dff11/resize/770x578/092c2dd62a6d35477ca39fa285ce34f7/samsung-galaxy-a5-04739-008.jpg" width="770" /><figcaption><span class="caption">Its unibody design gives the A5, pictured, Samsung's slimmest smartphone depth</span></figcaption></figure>It's a cute idea, but one that's clearly still in its infancy. Quality on my GIF was choppy in my hands-on demo, and that's because it caps off at a 640x480-pixel video resolution. Sharing is also limited. While animated GIFS are shareable through a messaging app, it wasn't clear if you could upload them to social networks like Facebook.<br/><h3>Where can you get the A5 and A3, and for how much?</h3><br/>The Galaxy A3 and A5 will launch in Asia first in November (including China), followed by rest of the world. While Samsung hasn't released pricing or distribution details yet (carriers will likely do that on their own), look for costs of unlocked models to come in significantly lower than the Note 4.<br/><h3>Outlook</h3><br/>Once again, Samsung's approach of aiming its first fully metal devices to the middle of the market rather than the tippy-top is a different strategy than I'd have expected from the smartphone leader. It isn't an unreasonable position, however. Appearances matter, and with midrange specs largely on par with competing devices, the more premium metal may very well help the A3 and A5 stand out against rival phones.

Oppo Brings Out the N3 with 16MP Rotating Camera

<p class="article__title article__title--single">As expected, Oppo has launched two new smartphones today at a press event in Singapore, the N3 and R5. N3 has been touted as the most interesting ‘camera phone’ ever with a motorised swivel camera that can track objects as they move, and can rotate up to 206 degrees.</p><br/>The successor to the N1 fashions a 16MP motorized camera letting users track objects as they move. The sensor used by the camera is 1/2.3-inch in size and the pixel size is 1.34micrometer. The camera uses Schneider Kreuznach-approved lens that sums it up to an impressive level of quality.<br/><br/><a href="http://www.igyaan.in/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/oppo_n3_landscape.jpg"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-88222" height="299" src="http://www.igyaan.in/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/oppo_n3_landscape.jpg" title="Oppo Brings Out the N3 with 16MP Rotating Camera " width="635" /></a><br/><br/>The mechanized camera is super useful to shoot panoramas and taking selfies for example. It comes with  a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 801 quad-core SoC, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, a nice 5.5-inch full HD LCD (the N1 had a 5.9-inch one), NFC and a 3,000 mAh fixed battery.<br/><br/>The N3 also comes with VOOC rapid charging with a smaller charger, which means you can go from zero to 75 per cent in just half an hour. The handset is now listed on the company’s China website with a price tag of CNY 3,999 (roughly Rs. 40,100). The company said that the handset’s dual-SIM variant will also arrive later.

Oppo Expected to Bring Out R5 and N3 on 29th October

<p class="article__title article__title--single"></p><br/>Oppo’s much anticipated N3 and R5 are said to launch at an event in Singapore on 29th October. Previous generation R Series handsets are known for their slim and sleek design and the new R5 is said to be designed along the same lines.<br/><br/>Both the devices are expected to come with support of 4G LTE out of the box. If so, the new R5 will be the slimmest 4G LTE handset available in the market. The recently released teaser shows two devices behind the curtain. The two devices shown are speculated to be the Oppo N3 and R5, however has been no confirmation or any other details revealed.<br/><br/><a href="http://www.igyaan.in/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/oppo_teaser_one_more_step.jpg"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-87853" height="624" src="http://www.igyaan.in/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/oppo_teaser_one_more_step.jpg" title="Oppo Expected to Bring Out R5 and N3 on 29th October" width="440" /></a><br/><br/>Earlier, the company teased the camera module of the expected handsets. Oppo N3 features have been leaked by various enthusiastic Chinese mobile showrooms in past few months. GSM Arena had leaked some renders of what could be the Oppo N3, which showcases a cylindrical rotating camera design.<br/><br/>The leaked teaser doesn’t show the cylindrical rotating camera, also, it is not immediately evident if that is indeed the design of the other phone. Oppo claims that one of its designs will incorporate a lithium-aluminum alloy, whereas the other one will use stainless steel.<br/><br/><a href="http://www.igyaan.in/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/oppo-n3-oct-teaser.jpg"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-87852" height="498" src="http://www.igyaan.in/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/oppo-n3-oct-teaser.jpg" title="Oppo Expected to Bring Out R5 and N3 on 29th October" width="580" /></a><br/><br/>Chinese electronic showrooms have already started taking pre-orders of the new Oppo N3. The full-fledged advertising campaigns of the Chinese mobile stores have revealed that the new Oppo N3 will sport a 5.5-inch full HD display and a rotating 16MP camera. If this is true, then the Find 7 will still remain the only Oppo smartphone with a quad-HD display. Another detail revealed is the Chinese pricing of the N3 at 4,928 Yuan which comes to roughly Rs. 43,000.

Nokia Mobiles Will Soon Be Officially Known as Microsoft Lumia

<p class="article__title article__title--single"></p><br/>Well, we had been dreading for this day to arrive and it’s here. <a href="http://www.igyaan.in/87688/nokia-microsoft-lumia/%20http://www.theverge.com/2014/10/21/7026427/microsoft-lumia-nokia-brand-replacement">The Verge reports </a>that Microsoft might announce that it is killing off the Nokia brand. The transition is expected to begin soon in which all the branding of Nokia will be replaced by Microsoft Lumia branding.<br/><br/>We had <a href="http://www.igyaan.in/77410/nokia-failed-microsoft-won/">reported this summer</a> about how Microsoft had planned to do away with the Nokia’s brand identity in its mobile business and seemed like the process has started. The devices are moving to <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/en/mobile/phones/lumia/">Microsoft’s new mobile site</a>. The French division of Nokia will be one of the first one’s to make the transition and adopt the “Microsoft Lumia” for its Facebook, Twitter, and other social media accounts. Microsoft had once claimed that the reason they are quitting the Nokia brand name for their phones is because they felt it comes from a bygone era.<br/><br/>This move is done to absolve all relation to the original Nokia, which will now become a separate entity under the leadership of another Indian, <a href="http://www.igyaan.in/75239/rajeev-suri/" title="Meet Rajeev Suri – As He Takes On The Reigns of Nokia">Rajeev Suri</a>.
